Do not wish for anything

I was 16 years old, it was a gloriously beautiful summer day in Sioux City, Iowa. The year was 1957. My buddy Paul Cabney and I were standing in a glass box about 8 feet in the air in the center of Paul’s father’s used car lot. From our vantage point we could see all of the cars and anyone who walked onto the lot. Paul and I were standing close to one of the large glass windows looking out at the cars when one of us wished for something. In the blink of an eye Mr. Cabney, always a nattily dressed handsome little man, walked over between us and said “boys you wish in one hand and shit in the other and see which one gets full first. Obviously I remember that moment vividly and I haven’t thought much about wishing for something since that day. If you want something–make a plan, get the resources and the people you need and start. Your plan does not have to be perfect. You can correct and revise as you go along. I do not think wishing gets one very much. If there is something you desire go after it. Do not wish for anything.
