Born on May 31, 1941, in Sioux City, Iowa, Stephen Jepson discovered early in life that play was more than recreation — it was medicine. A gifted ceramic artist whose work earned recognition from the Smithsonian Institution, Stephen spent decades as a professor at the University of Central Florida.
But it was his personal discovery — that challenging, novel physical movements could rewire the aging brain — that became his life's mission. Stephen observed that the movements children do naturally on playgrounds (climbing, balancing, juggling, throwing with the non-dominant hand) are precisely the activities that build new neural pathways and prevent cognitive decline.
Today, at 85, Stephen rides unicycles, juggles while balancing on boards, and moves with the agility of someone decades younger. He has spent over 20 years sharing this philosophy through speaking events, training videos, and personal coaching — reaching over 5,000 people worldwide.
Three pillars that drive the Never Leave The Playground movement.
The movements we did as children — climbing, balancing, throwing — are the most powerful medicine for the aging brain. Play isn't childish; it's essential.
Brain health, physical balance, emotional joy, and social connection — Stephen's approach addresses the whole person, not just one dimension of fitness.
From PBS television to international speaking tours, Stephen's message has reached audiences worldwide — proving that age is just a number.
